The Road Trip

In the summer of 2015 I embarked on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. I had just bought a bright red 1974 Ford F100 and wanted to see if it would make the journey. In hindsight, this was not my best idea. I barely knew what I was doing and it’s a miracle the truck didn’t break down in the middle of the desert…but also, it was an incredible idea.

This trip would spark a desire for travel, adventure, and camping. It was the first time I began taking photos and videos of myself drawing and exploring in the wild. Doing this on my own was scary of course, but also rewarding in that I found out what I was capable of.

Doing this on my own was scary of course, but also rewarding in that I found out what I was capable of.

I remember having the windows down driving through the desert of Arizona. The wind was starting to get cool and strong, the sky was turning gray–a storm was coming.

I rolled up my windows and gripped the steering wheel. As the rain began pouring and the storm grew closer and stronger, my nerves began to get more and more shaky. I turned up the volume of the podcast I was listening to so my mind was distracted from the danger ahead but also focused on the task of driving.

I finally got through it, thankful for no incidents.

This month I will be making a second voyage on the road but with a much trustier ship and a much loftier goal. Instead of just the Grand Canyon, I will be seeking out every other National Park in my ‘96 Toyota 4Runner.

My goal is to continue building products for each park that represent my style and perspective of the location as I’ve done with Terlingua and Chile. As I travel and camp, I’ll be attempting to document and publish as much of my trip as possible including videos, articles and possibly even a podcast.
